Mindful Media Moment: Brian Williams' final sign-off on "The 11th Hour"

With the increase of misinformation circulating the media these days, it’s important to take a moment to reflect and be mindful of the information being consumed.

In recent weeks, we’ve seen several legacy news outlets make personnel changes for various reasons. One noteworthy change came when Brian Williams of MSNBC made his final sign-off on “The 11th Hour” on Dec. 9, 2021.

Brian Williams, MSNBC news anchor, delivers a grim warning during his final sign-off on Dec. 9, 2021. “They've decided to burn it all down with us inside—that should scare you to no end, as much as it scares an aging volunteer fireman," Williams said.

Personally, I don’t consume legacy media on a routine basis so I don’t hold strong opinions on Williams either way. Although, it is worth mentioning that he’s faced controversy for fabricating war stories.

The main reason I’m drawing attention to this clip is to highlight the somber warning he gives to Americans upon his network departure. I couldn’t help but think of JFK’s “Secret Society Speech.”

President John F. Kennedy delivers a speech before the American Newspaper Publishers Association on April 27, 1961. “The very word ‘secrecy’ is repugnant in a free and open society,” Kennedy said. “And we are as a people inherently and historically opposed to secret societies, to secret oaths and to secret proceedings.”
